RC Bait Boat electrical + CAD project

The Project:

  • The project involved developing a 3D printed RC bait boat that can be used or fishing on a £150 budget.

  • The project required focus on electrical system design to create functioning RC controls, a robust, practical and versatile design via CAD that will cater to the right customers and a high-quality design that makes it easy to use.

Design and Development

  • Learnt how to use a 3D-printer to creating the general body of the bait boat, making various compartments that can be disconnected and reconnected to offer customisability to the user, while meeting the material budget.

  • Created both a cardboard and mini 3D-printed prototype to get visual perspective of the feasibility of the design and if there were any challenges that could be sorted (e.g. buoyancy, food bait space, visual appeal…)

  • Used a CNC milling machine to create custom aluminium brackets that would mount the motors that would turn the boat rotors at the rear of the boat as well as a turning machine that would make the rotor steel drive shaft rods.
  • Compact and simple electrical connectivity was considered ensuring minimal wiring was used to connect all components together and ensure connectivity of the battery and Arduino to an RC controller allowing for key functions (rotor rotation)

The Project Final Result:

  • The project yielded successful results with the electrical part of the project being successful. The boat was able to offer basic RC control such as forward and backwards movement, turning and also the opening of a rear bait door to release the bait into the water.
